Day 3 driving from Cappadoc Egirdir to Döşemealti outside Anatalya includes Sagalassos

 April 25, 2026

The reason we chose to drive from Cappadocia to Kas was to see two Archeological Sites: Sagalassos  and Termessos . Happy we did, both are very special places. Because we drove, we have seen so much more and meeting friendly & kind people along our way than if we have flown to Kaş. After yesterday's mistake of not having food for too long, we stopped in Isparta to try Boreck. Google Maps sent us on an interesting journey in the Otomotiv (automotive) zone without success for breakfast.  It is like India in that like businesses are clustered.  We found a place with Borek in their name, but they didn't serve.  We headed to another and we enjoyed an unforgettable cultural experience.  We used Googe translate sparingly and guessed using body language. We watched Katmer although she didn't pronounce it anywhere close to what we saw on their window

What an unforgettable cultural experience. Chose this place because John wanted to try börek, a regional specialty. Instead we ordered katmer based on the convenient menu on their window. It was fascinating to watch one woman roll out the dough.  The grace & rhythm of her motions were culinary poetry. The other woman babble friendly to us, occasionally we’d use Google Translate and most relied on familiar words and body language to understand as she baked our katmer.

We relied on their window to order since the menu was only in Turkish

In the Western Taurus, now called the Turkish Lakes Region, Sagalassos's history dates back to Hittite and Lydian times before Alexander the Great arrived in 333B.C. on his way to Persia.  25BC it became part of the Roman Empire.  Devastated by an earthquake in 518...  Skip forward to 1990 when a Belgium researched started excavated.

Most of the statues were lost, with only the two statue groups still visible. (last sentence https://www.ertungaecir.com/the-ancient-city-of-sagalassos/)

Shrubs and trees blossoms that if you look through them, you see more ruins

I first interacted with this couple at the fountain offering to take a photo of the two of them. After we traipsed all over the ruins, I spotted the elusive postcard at the shop in the parking lot.  Who was in front of me in line but the same couple! They then delivered a Snickers bar to me where I sat writing the postcards. So I went to the car and grabbed two of my Doves Dark squares to share with them. Interactions like this enhance my travel experience.
