Local foods Konya Turkey

 April 23, 2026

Arrived in Konya, Anatolia region, Turkey this evening. John had done his homework and learned local foods.  Here's what we ordered at Sufi restaurant, steps for Araf Hotel where we are staying.

Yağ somunu is a traditional Turkish bread specialty, most notably from the Konya region, that can be described in English as a sesame-crusted flatbread stuffed with cheese, meat, or vegetables and buttered heavily (google)

and

Tirit that our restaurant described as Tandoori bread that is carefully fried in butter. It is softened by pouring the flavor of bone broth on it.  Then, yogurt is added and it is flavored with spices.Grilled lamb in our case, is placed on the top and heated butter is drizzled as a final touch. A different flavor in each layer, a taste of tradition in each bite.

It was an amazing meal for 1,490TL ($33 today). We couldn't eat all of it.  The Konyan pizza/Yağ somunu we packaged for my 1st breakfast before our breakfast is served at hotel.

Here's the view from Sufi Restaurant

A women leaves her very nice purse and shopping bag unattended to join 4 other women outside for tea and to smoke! She even removed her headscarf.  In the background is a mosque that is closed for renovations.

And of course you must try Turkish tea at the end of every meal
