Making boxes from palm fronds in Faris Egypt

visited November 3, 2025

We were ferried across Faris in tuk-tuks or as our guide says, tuf-tuf’s (pop 7,000) Hany also claimed that the government invested 25million USD last year into community.  This town has very trashy compared to the smaller island village we visited yesterday. There were some paved roads!  We arrived in 5-10 min to meet a 65yr old  gentleman who makes boxes out of palm fronds. He’s been doing this for 53 years, but not always in Faris. Therefore, he has a wife where he used to live and one in Faris. He first wife has visited Faris. We didn’t ask how that worked.  After a quick demonstration to create the materials, I was selected to make a box with him. Fascinating experience.

These boxes sell for so little & now I can't recall, but a chair that you see behind John  that takes 3 days to produce that we sat upon was $12 (USD)
Short story--takes too long with internet as it is on the Nile in the middle of nearly nowhere.
