Vaison-la-Romaine has it all: Roman ruins, art, birds & the only restaurant with 5 star google rating I've seen
October 21, 2025
I admit that I only found out about Vaison-la-Romaine because I Googled restaurants near me and Restaruant Crisol had 64 5 stars and was 17 min from our apartment. Thank goodness we made reservations because they were completely full.
It's an exceptionally beautiful drive from Seblet to Vaison-la-Romaine.
Like everywhere in the Rhône region, there are many wineries to stop in for a tasting. Domaine de Mourchon in Ségaret was recommended by our host and stands out as our favorite not only for quality of the wine which you can see wine spectator highly regards, but also the quality of the experience and the beauty of the rural setting.
Continuing to Vaison-la-Romaine, we parked and walked around the outside of the Roman ruins because we arrived too late, after 5pm for our 7pm reservation at Crisol.
Roman city
The Roman ruins of Vaison-la-Romaine are among some of the most important in France. Easily accessible, the two main sites that are open to the public - Puymin and La Villasse - can be found in the town centre, on each side of the tourist office.
Shout out to the Vaison-la-Romaine community for supporting art!
The food at Crisol was every bit as good as we anticipated. Photos don't do it justice, but it's still fun to share and be reminded of the incredible sensations.
Butternut velvet soup, charcuterie plate, Fish with curry sauce, roast chicken with mushrooms, panna cotta, vanilla ice cream.
For me, the most memorable experience in Vaison-la-Romaine was the flocks of birds and bats. While we've seen Roman ruins, eaten phenomenal French food, I haven't experienced the sound and density that we did in Vaison-la-Romaine at sunset. Watch my YouTube:

it's the very best way to experience. The cacophony is happiness to a biologist concerned about bird populations
