Roussillon, France hiking the Ochre trail

Roussillon is known for its colorful ochre houses and Le Sentier des Ocres/the Ochre Trail. The source the color is the rich deposits of iron ore pigments found in the clay near the village.  Located at the southern end of the Plateau de Vaucluse, Roussillon is officially named one of France’s most beautiful villages. With its warmly toned colour scheme and advantageous situation overlooking the provençal countryside, it’s easy to see why it deserves such a title.  We walked the Ochre Loop Trail, measured in minutes, we opted for the longest route, 50 min.

Not everything is red, some beautiful green fern amongst  the evergreens as well as chestnuts.

Have never been on a trail more prepared for emergencies!  I'm inspired.

Based on the crowds on the trail, we settled for a great photo of the village and took off.

Getting there
We rented a car using Priceline at Alamo. It was $60/day, diesel gas; pick up at TGV train station. Easy to find as we arrived on 20 bus from Avignon and passed Alamo along the way to bus stop at train station. Fast and efficient check in with the manager who had excellent English.

Parking and Entrance Fee
Parking lot is located at the trail head and costs Euro 4.  The trail costs E3.50pp. The light in the parking lot hit the cemetery brilliantly.

Additional note, we visited Saintes-Maries-sur-de-la-Mer, Roussillon and  L'Islle sur la Sorgue in one very long day. Each are posted separately.
