Park La Colline des Mourgues & Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Consolation de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon
Seeking sunshine & warmer temperatures than inside our flat, I looked at Google maps for gardens and parks nearby that were open on Mondays. I chose La Colline des Mourgues a 2.5km walk across two bridges from Avignon (the prefecture of the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region) and after the second bridge across the Rhone into La Région Occitanie, Pyrénées - Méditerrainée
Located at the top of Mourgues hill (note: Mourgues in the language of Occitanie means nuns), Chapelle Notre-Dame de Consolation is a small chapel built in 1760 by the nuns of Sainte-Elisabeth. The chapel was restored around 2003 and adorned with murals depicting various biblical events related to wine, such as the Last Supper and the Marriage at Cana. The frescoes were created by artist Albert Martin, illustrating the traditional feast of Saint-Marc associated with vineyards and wine.
The walk was full of photo opportunities and history.
Tour Philippe-le-Bel is a medieval tower in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon which marked the French terminus of the Saint-Bénézet Bridge across the Rhone between the Kingdom of France and Papal territory of Avignon. It's Monday so closed
