Kosrae, Micronesian hike with Salik March 2019

Updated the photos in 2025,  post is from 2019

Thought the machete was for show, but I was wrong, he cut this opening so that I could see this fruit better

This is an invasive African snail. They collect them to feed to the pigs

We learned about the 3 different gingers.  The first photo is a ginger that is used in steaming, like a pig roast. Offers subtle flavor and it heat resistant

This ginger is the one we use as a root in the USA.

And finally this little beauty is used for the hair as a conditioner. I tried it and it made my hair so soft and manageable

The Ka tree has hollow roots. This one is estimated to  be 80 yr old.  Salik hits the root it with a rock and it’s a thunder carrying-sound.  This blog doesn't allow uploading of videos from my photos because it's unforgettable

Beautiful eucalyptus have invaded the forest

Another unforgettable experience was the coconut that Salik scaled a tree and served to us--unlike the many I've tasted, this coconut palm was growing in the soil of the forest and not the sand. Sublime and delicious.
